What does actually the TDI badge mean on vehicles by Volkswagen?
TDI stands for Turbo Diesel Injection and has been used by Volkswagen Group for many years to mark their cars equipped with turbo diesel engines with electronic fuel injection. VW is one of the latest automotive brands that abandoned the traditional electronic distributor injection pump (BOSCH pump / Pumpe Duse) approach when it comes to diesel engines fuel supply systems. Now all of their diesels are common rail, but the label remains unchanged, being kind of a brand itself since 1989 and Audi 2.5 TDI.
Traditionally, depending on the engine power some of the badge letters may be red. Those specialy tuned for economy and low emissions have the last letter painted blue. In addition to Volkswagen, this label is used by all other brands of the group: Audi, Škoda and Seat. Most of the TDI powertrains have their SDI (non turbo) siblings.
