What does actually the M badge mean on vehicles by BMW?
This badge is, by definition, carried by the most powerful variants of each of BMW models, usually equipped with upgraded engines, special suspension, brake and exhaust systems, with distinctive sporty details on the bodywork and interior, as well as specially designed alloy wheels. For a long time the badge was exclusively displayed by petrol-powered cars, but recently there are some new diesel ones appearing.
BMW M is an abbreviated form of "BMW Motorsport GmbH", a subsidiary of BMW AG responsible for the sports division of the brand. Founded back in 1972 it was in charge of the BMW racing team, but it soon produced the first ever street M-car, the 1978 BMW M1. Just one year later the M535i appeared and a tradition of high performance family cars with the prestigious M badge was created.
