Virtual Adviser's™ opinion
Two significantly similar cars, no doubt about that. Still, each one has something different to offer. While both cars belong to the Small family car segment and utilize the 5-door hatchback body style, one major difference is the fuel type they use. More specifically, 1.6 TDCi is a diesel car, but 2.0 EcoBoost ST is powered by a petrol engine. The first one has a Peugeot-engineered powertrain under the hood, a 4-cylinder, 8-valves 92hp unit, while the other one gets its power and torque from a 4-cylinder, 16-valves 250hp engine designed by Mazda.
SafetyVehicles in question are actually the same model so there's nothing here to provide an advantage to any of the two.
ReliabilityReliability is not the best thing to consider on the make level, but it is worth mentioning that Ford displays lower than average breakdown numbers, when all the models are taken into account. These are the official statistics, while our visitors describe reliability of Ford with an average rating of 4.4 out of 5. That apart, owners of different cars powered by the same engine as Focus 1.6 TDCi rank it on average as 4.2, while the one under the competitor's bonnet gets 3.0 out of 5.
Performance & Fuel economy2.0 EcoBoost ST is way more agile, reaching 100km/h in 6 seconds less than its competitor. In addition to that it accelerates all the way to 248 kilometers per hour, 68km/h more than the other car. When it comes to fuel economy an obvious choice would be Focus 1.6 TDCi, averaging around 4.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (63 mpg), in combined cycle. That's 60% difference compared to Focus 2.0 EcoBoost ST!
Verdict
1.6 TDCi appears just a bit more reliable, although the difference is truly marginal. The most important thing when deciding between any two vehicles should always be safety, both passive and active. In this case though, it seems that both cars show similar levels of passenger protection all together, so that won't break a tie. But one thing that actually could is the performance, with 2.0 EcoBoost ST outracing its opponent in any situation possible, making it better choice for boy racers. It does come at a cost though, and that's the fuel consumption... At the end, as much as I'd like to give you a winner here, it's simply a pure tie if you ask me. Nevertheless, let's not forget that people have different preferences and needs, so what really counts is your personal feel. I'm only here to help.
