Virtual Adviser's™ opinion
These two vehicles have almost nothing in common. They both run on four wheels though, but that's about it. For a start, they are not even classified under the same segment, with the Brera being a sports car and the Stelvio representing suv vehicle class. Apart from that, different body styles uncover their separate purposes. The first one is a 3-door coupe meant for people who like to emphasize the sportivness of their car and are somewhat performance-oriented. The other one, a 5-door suv is mostly desired by those who have some or even extensive offroad aspirations and consider their car to be a part of an adventure.
SafetyThe fact that the Stelvio got tested by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), while the other contender didn't, puts it sky-high safety-wise, in my eyes at least. Still, apart from the official crash test results there are other things we need to be aware of. The second vehicle is a suv which already provides a serious advantage over the sports car competitor, at least that's what statistics show. Furthermore, when it comes to weight, a factor that most people underestimate, Stelvio offers a marginal difference of 5% more metal.
ReliabilityManufacturers have been building their reliability reputation for decades now and, generally speaking, it appears that Alfa Romeo belongs within the least desireable group, when all the models are taken into account. That's the official data, while our visitors describe reliability of Alfa Romeo with an average rating of 4.2 out of 5. Independent research findings rank Brera as average reliability-wise, and Stelvio is more or less at the same level. That apart, owners of different cars powered by the same engine as Brera rank it on average as 4.0, while the one under the competitor's bonnet gets 4.5 out of 5.
Performance & Fuel economyStelvio is undoubtly more agile, reaching 100km/h in 1.3 seconds less than its competitor. Still, it lacks the power to win the top speed competition, topping at 215 kilometers per hour, 15km/h less than the other car. When it comes to fuel economy an obvious choice would be Stelvio, averaging around 4.8 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (59 mpg), in combined cycle. That's 42% difference compared to Brera!
Verdict
Stelvio appears just a bit more reliable, although the difference is truly marginal. The most important thing when deciding between any two vehicles should always be safety, both passive and active. In my opinion, everything taken into account, Stelvio beats the other contender by far, making it the best choice without even considering other things. When it comes to performance, both vehicles provide similar experience, so I wouldn't point any of them out. Stelvio is in a different dimension economy-wise, and many people will find that crucial. All together, there's not much more to say, in this case I wouldn't even consider anything but Stelvio. In any case that's my personal view, built upon all the data available to me. What should decide here though is the way you feel about the two vehicles, and I hope you'll find my guidelines useful in the process.
