Virtual Adviser's™ opinion
Two significantly similar cars, no doubt about that. Still, each one has something different to offer. While both cars belong to the Small family car segment and utilize the 4-door sedan body style, one major difference is the fuel type they use. More specifically, 2000 Lancer is a petrol car, but 2007 Lancer is powered by a diesel engine. The first one has a Mitsubishi-engineered powertrain under the hood, a 4-cylinder, 16-valves 136hp unit, while the other one gets its power and torque from a 4-cylinder, 16-valves 140hp engine designed by Volkswagen.
SafetyThe first thing to look into here would be the results from European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) tests performed on the two cars. Good thing is that both vehicles got tested, with the 2007 Lancer showing an incomparably higher level of safety offered. Still, apart from the official crash test results there are other things we need to be aware of. Both vehicles belong to the small family car segment, which is generally classifying them somewhere in the middle safety-wise, but it doesn't do much to help us decide between the two. On the other hand, when it comes to weight, a factor that most people underestimate, the newer model offers a considerable difference of 16% more metal.
ReliabilityReliability is not the best thing to consider on the make level, but it is worth mentioning that Mitsubishi sits somewhere in the middle fault-wise, at least on all of the models level. That's the official data, while our visitors describe reliability of Mitsubishi with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5. The same official information place Lancer as average reliability-wise, and Lancer is more or less at the same level. We should definitely mention that owners of cars with the same powertrain as the older model rank it on average as 4.5, while the one under the competitor's bonnet gets 4.3 out of 5.
Performance & Fuel economy2000 Lancer is a bit more agile, reaching 100km/h in 0.1 seconds less than its competitor. Still, it lacks the power to win the top speed competition, topping at 204 kilometers per hour, 3km/h less than the other car. When it comes to fuel economy the winner has to be the newer model, averaging around 6.4 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (44 mpg), in combined cycle. We can't ignore that 16% difference compared to the older model.
Verdict
2000 Lancer appears just a bit more reliable, although the difference is truly marginal. The most important thing when deciding between any two vehicles should always be safety, both passive and active. In my opinion, everything taken into account, the newer model beats the other contender by far, making it the best choice without even considering other things. When it comes to performance, both vehicles provide similar experience, so I wouldn't point any of them out. the newer model , on the other hand, consumps significantly less fuel, and that's a big plus. All together, there's not much more to say, in this case I wouldn't even consider anything but 2007 Lancer. Anyway, that's the most objective conclusion I could've came up with and it's based solely on the information found on this website.
