Virtual Adviser's™ opinion
Two significantly similar cars, no doubt about that. Still, each one has something different to offer. Having both cars powered by petrol engines and utilizing the 4-door sedan body style within the same 'Luxury car' segment, the only major difference here really is their wheel drive configuration (rear for the Jaguar and front in the case of the Rover). The first one has a Jaguar-engineered powertrain under the hood, a 6-cylinder, 24-valves 201hp unit, while the other one gets its power and torque from a 6-cylinder, 24-valves 177hp engine designed by Rover.
SafetyThe fact that the Rover got tested by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), while the other contender didn't, offers a slight advantage, as the 4-star rating is better than none. Moving further on, let's take a closer look at some additional safety-related facts. Both vehicles belong to the luxury car segment, which is generally a very good thing safety-wise, but it doesn't do much to help us decide between the two. Furthermore, when it comes to weight, a factor that most people underestimate, S-Type offers a marginal difference of 8% more metal.
ReliabilityReliability is not the best thing to consider on the make level, but it is worth mentioning that Rover as a brand displays somewhat better results, when all the models are taken into account. That's the official data, while our visitors describe reliability of Jaguar with an average rating of 4.1, and models under the Rover badge with 4.5 out of 5. The same official information place S-Type as average reliability-wise, and 75 is more or less at the same level. We should definitely mention that owners of cars with the same powertrain as S-Type rank it on average as 2.0, while the one under the competitor's bonnet gets 5.0 out of 5.
Performance & Fuel economyJaguar is a bit more agile, reaching 100km/h in 0.9 seconds less than its competitor. In addition to that it accelerates all the way to 228 kilometers per hour, 13km/h more than the other car. When it comes to fuel economy the winner has to be S-Type, averaging around 9.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (30 mpg), in combined cycle. We can't ignore that 11% difference compared to Rover 75.
Verdict
Rover definitely wins the reliability competition, everything taken into consideration. The most important thing when deciding between any two vehicles should always be safety, both passive and active. In my opinion, everything taken into account, Rover 75 offers much better overall protection, which launches it ahead of the other contender. From there things take a different direction, with Jaguar offering somewhat better performance, just enough to call it quicker. To make things even better, it consumps less fuel! It's really tough to make a final decision here, but if I'd need to, I'd say Rover.
