Virtual Adviser's™ opinion
Well, these are two pretty similar cars we have here! It's only details that could potentially make the difference. Considering they both belong to the mpv segment and utilize the same 5-door MPV body style and the front wheel drive system, it all comes up to the specific petrol engine choice they offer. The first one has a Chrysler-engineered powertrain under the hood, a 4-cylinder, 16-valves 151hp unit, while the other one gets its power and torque from a 4-cylinder, 16-valves 91hp engine designed by Daihatsu.
SafetyThe fact that the Chrysler got tested by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), while the other contender didn't, doesn't actually do much for it, as it's still a lousy 2-star coffin on wheels. That aside, let's consider some other aspects which affect safety. Both vehicles belong to the mpv segment, which is generally a good thing safety-wise, but that fact doesn't break the tie between the two cars. Furthermore, if we'd like to consider vehicle mass in this context too, which we definitely should, the American car offers a self-explainatory difference of 77% more metal.
ReliabilityReliability is not the best thing to consider on the make level, but it is worth mentioning that Daihatsu presents an order of magnitude better choice, at least on all of the models level. These are the results of an independent reasearch, while our visitors describe reliability of Chrysler with an average rating of 4.4, and models under the Daihatsu badge with 4.1 out of 5. The same official information place Voyager as average reliability-wise, and Gran Move is more or less at the same level. That apart, owners of different cars powered by the same engine as the American car rank it on average as 5.0 out of 5, exactly the same as the other one.
Performance & Fuel economyDaihatsu is a bit more agile, reaching 100km/h in 0.3 seconds less than its competitor. Still, it lacks the power to win the top speed competition, topping at 165 kilometers per hour, 15km/h less than the other car. When it comes to fuel economy an obvious choice would be the Japanese car, averaging around 7.6 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (37 mpg), in combined cycle. That's 39% difference compared to the American car!
Verdict
Daihatsu appears just a bit more reliable, although the difference is truly marginal. The most important thing when deciding between any two vehicles should always be safety, both passive and active. In my opinion, everything taken into account, the American car beats the other contender by far, making it the best choice without even considering other things. From there things take a different direction, with Daihatsu offering somewhat better performance, just enough to call it quicker. To make things even better, it consumps less fuel! It's not difficult to say then that if I'd need to make a choice, it would definitely be the Daihatsu.
